Cron Job in cPanel
Filed Under Domain & Server Hosting | Leave a Comment
Cron is a time-based job scheduler in Unix-like computer operating systems. The name cron comes from the word chronograph (a time-piece). Cron enables users to schedule jobs (commands or shell scripts) to run automatically at a certain time or date. It is commonly used to automate system maintenance or administration, though its general-purpose nature means that it can be used for other purposes, such as connecting to the Internet and downloading email. [Wikipedia]
A cron job is an important tool that can be used for running scripts and re-indexing a web page to providing backup for a database.

Discover the mission
The premise is simple: Internet Explorer 6 is antiquated, doesn’t support key web standards, and should be phased out. This isn’t about being anti-Microsoft, it’s about making sure that we encourage people to move to modern browsers such as IE8, Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera. IE6 accounts for up to 20% of web usage, primarily via business users. Clients pressure designers to ’force’ sites to work in IE6, and designers, not wanting to lose business, comply, using hacks and workarounds. This wastes time and money. While Microsoft is encouraging companies and developers to move on from IE6, designers need to unite, and we all need to move on.
“Many other companies have already stopped supporting older browsers like Internet Explorer 6.0 as well as browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers. We’re also going to begin phasing out our support, starting with Google Docs and Google Sites. As a result you may find that from March 1 key functionality within these products — as well as new Docs and Sites features — won’t work properly in older browsers.” – Google
*MICROSOFT confirm end to IE6 pain!* Internet Explorer 6 has official “End of Life” from Microsoft on 13-Jul-2010 – see this page on their website: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifesupsps/#Internet_Explorer. After this date, Microsoft will treat the browser as ‘dead and buried’, they will not provide any support whatsoever, including security updates (this is a great way to explain to customers why they need to rid their networks of IE6).
Good news, eh? Now we just need to spread the word and make sure all developers actively inhibit IE6 support after that date (sooner would be better). Please post this fact and link to M$ site on your home page to make everyone very aware that IE6 is finally going to die! You’ll note the browser has already been EOL on several platforms/SPs
As with any EOL product, developers/designers can (and should/must!) easily charge extra 200% or more for working with EOL software as there is no vendor support to back them up (not that there ever was).
Our latest project, Inspi.re has been IE6-incompatible and proud of it since day one. We urge IE6 users to upgrade and so should every website out there. We’re doing very well without the market share of people who won’t update their web browser. So can your company.
My wish is to see the IE6 figure on that page go below 5% in the first quarter of 2010: http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp

What is FTP?FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. In easy to understand terms, FTP is the way that computers talk to each other to transfer files. It’s quicker than transferring a file by email or on a disk. It’s direct access to the space that you are transferring files to.
Ok, so how do we get connected in order to transfer files using FTP? Good question. We need a ‘client’ or a browser that speaks ‘FTP’. We need an FTP client.
File permissions are necessary to protect and to instruct the server about how to handle certain files. They can be set using raw FTP commands, but the easiest way to set them is using an inbuilt tool from your FTP client. This is where some FTP clients do not support the changing of permissions on files. One good example is the built-in FTP client in Dreamweaver, which will only allow you to set permissions using a specific raw FTP command. If you have multiple files and folders to set permissions on, typing the FTP command multiple times would become tedious.
It is a good idea to become at least a little familiar with what permissions are used for what purpose. The reason for this is that most scripts will actually need certain permissions to run. If they are simply uploaded as normal by say, Dreamweaver, they will inherit ‘normal’ permissions by default, but it may not be suitable in order to actually ‘run’ or ‘execute’ the commands that are inside the script. Most default permissions will only allow you to read a file, which will unfortunately not be enough to run a script.
The most common permission required to run a script is CHMOD 755 (-rwx r-x r-x) [Read more]

Domain Registration Price Increase Beginning 1st March, 2010
Filed Under Domain & Server Hosting | Leave a Comment
Today, we received a copy of an email which was sent out to all ICANN accredited domain name registrars.
Beginning 1st March 2010 there will be a domain price increase.
The price for a InterNIC domain name registration will increase 19% from the current base price RM30 to RM35.70. This does not include RM0.25 ICANN fee and registrar markup.
According to the ICANN-VeriSign Settlement, this 19% price increase can and may be implemented each and every year. This may be a good time to bulk-renew your domain names and register new domains while pricing remains low.
| Domain Extention (gTLDs) |
Price per year (RM) |
|---|---|
| .com | 36.00 |
| .net | 36.00 |
| .org | 36.00 |

Marketing Your Business on Facebook: Group or Page?
Filed Under Social Media Strategy | Leave a Comment
Small business owners such as myself are always on the lookout for ways to promote their business. With over 150 million users and still growing, Facebook can be a great way to do that.
What are the two approaches in Facebook?
There are two tools that Facebook offers that can be used to market your business: groups and pages.
The differences between groups and pages are subtle, and average Facebook users probably don’t notice how they are different. In fact, I didn’t realize the difference myself, even after I started looking into which to use – which is how I ended up creating a group before I realized the error of my ways and created a page instead.
So why did I ultimately decide to use a Facebook page instead of a group? Simply put, because pages offer more flexibility to post such things as:
- Customer reviews of my work
- Recent blog posts through the RSS application
- Connections to pages of my clients
But groups can have their benefits too – just not for my purposes. Here is a quick table that summarizes the differences between the two tools:
| Key Feature | Page | Group |
| Shortcut URL | Yes | No |
| Discussion forum | Yes | Yes |
| Discussion wall | Yes | Yes |
| Extra applications? | Yes | No |
| Messaging to all members | Yes | Yes |
| Visitor statistics | Yes | No |
| Video and photo galleries | Yes | Yes |
| Event creation and invitation | Yes | No |
| Promotion with ads | Yes | No |
Thoughts?
So now that you know the difference between Facebook groups and pages, which would you use to promote your business, or that of a business or organization you work for or with?
If you’re a small business owner and already use a Facebook group or page to market yourself, which approach do you use and why? Is it working for you?
Share your thoughts with everyone on both of these questions…
